Here are a bunch of quotations, paraphrased, from the last five minutes of my last creative writing class. They’re here because I want to remember them, and I think it’s important that you hear them:
The world has no intention of making room for you. I don’t care if you write. The most active thing in the world is to ask questions. Ask your mom, your dogs, and your breakfast questions. I want you to work like fuck and exist for a reason. The moment the world stops surprising you, you have failed. The world hasn’t failed you. You have failed the world.
The world is not full of choices. I think you have one choice, every minute, of every day. It’s impossible and it’s everything. Ask questions.
(And, my note: if you attend the University of Louisville, let me know. And I’ll tell you about a teacher who has the potential to change the way you look at yourself and your writing.)
